Short entries, kept slowly

On leaving the porch light on

There's a particular kind of quiet that only shows up after the second frost — not the silence of nothing happening, but of everything having already happened and settled. I spent most of the evening resetting the trellis wire instead of writing, which is its own kind of writing.

Tomorrow I'll try to get the last of the bulbs in before the ground closes up for good.

A short list of things worth repairing

The kettle, the gate hinge, the good coat — not because they can't be replaced, but because knowing how they were made is half of knowing how to fix them. I keep a small drawer just for this: screws sorted by nothing in particular, string, a spool of solder older than I'd like to admit.

Notes from the ridge trail, out and back

Six hours, most of it uphill on the way out, which is the correct way to do it even if it doesn't feel that way at the time. Snow only in the shaded switchbacks. Brought too much bread and not enough water, as always.
